A boutique hotel in Maine has done away with the front desk entirely. According to Hotel Dive, the property operates a remote concierge concept: guests check in via a mobile app or a phone call, and a 24/7 team handles everything from luggage to restaurant bookings from a remote hub.
For small hotels, this is a massive overhead cutter. No overnight staff, no physical check-in counter, no idle waiting. And yet, the guest still gets a live human at the other end of the line. In my view, this model makes perfect sense for independent properties that can't afford a 24-hour reception but still want to offer personalized service.
The technology behind it isn't rocket science: a good PMSPMSThe property management system is a hotel's core software. It handles reservations, check-in and check-out, room assignment, billing and the status of every stay. It is the operational heart that most other tools plug... integration, a messaging platform, and maybe a smart lock system. The real innovation is in the operational mindset. As reported by Hotel Dive, this approach helps eliminate overhead costs while maintaining round-the-clock guest support. We'll likely see more boutiques follow suit.
