Engine, the Permira-backed startup, has bought the TMC Options Travel. According to Skift, the company spent a decade selling hotel rooms to businesses that never hired a travel management company. Now it wants to build its own corporate booking tool.
My read: this moves Engine up the value chain. It already has hotel distribution, and with Options Travel it gains a direct relationship with the client and the traveler. Buying a TMC is not the typical move for a tech platform, but it makes sense if the plan is to use that operation as the base for a proprietary booking product.
For hoteliers, the door opens a little wider. More players with financial muscle entering corporate travel means more channels to sell outside the OTAsOTAAn online travel agency is a channel that sells accommodation and travel online in exchange for a commission. Booking.com and Expedia are the biggest. They bring volume and visibility, but charge commissions that eat... and more pressure for business booking to finally go digital. In my opinion, that is the headline that matters.
