Amex buys TheFork, TravelAI acquires Sonder brand, Alexa+ sells trips with Priceline, Airbnb adds car

American Express is about to buy TheFork, and this is not a simple restaurant reservations acquisition. It is a play for your discretionary spend data and for new cardholders who could end up at your hotel. Meanwhile, TravelAI takes over the Sonder brand, Amazon Alexa+ starts selling trips through Priceline, Airbnb adds car rentals, and the EU is preparing a digital identity that will change check-in forever. Let's break it down.
What matters today
Amex buys TheFork to pull consumer data and cardholders away from hotels. American Express is not just adding a restaurant booking platform. It is getting 20 million active users, data on dining spend, location and frequency, plus a gateway to convince non-cardholders to sign up for an Amex. According to Skift, the real goal is discretionary spending data and global expansion.
- 20 million active TheFork users move into Amex's base, many of them not yet card members.
- Restaurant transaction data lets Amex fine-tune cobranded campaigns with hotels and airlines.
- For hoteliers, more pressure: Amex can cross-reference dinner data with stays and roll out dynamic packages that compete directly with direct booking.
Revenue and distribution
Airbnb now rents cars, and it is doing it with Expedia's help. The new car tab on Airbnb is powered by CarTrawler, the same platform Expedia is acquiring. According to Skift, Airbnb wants to be the only travel app you need, but the partner is its biggest rival. That turns CarTrawler into a neutral mobility hub connecting two giants. For hotels, the question is whether they can integrate these services into their own offer or if they will depend more and more on external platforms.
China fines Trip.com $770 million for anticompetitive practices. The Chinese regulator's penalty targets three bad practices: exclusivity clauses with hotels, minimum pricing on its channels and traffic manipulation inside the platform. Per Skift, the case sets a global precedent on how OTAs wield their platform power. Independent hotels across Asia-Pacific may gain more flexibility to distribute outside Trip.com.
AI in hospitality
Amazon Alexa+ starts selling real trips, and Priceline is the first guinea pig. Alexa+ stores credit cards, supports the MCP protocol and has 180 million Prime members. The difference from OpenAI's failed attempts is that payment is already built in. According to Skift, the Priceline test aims to solve the big bottleneck of conversational AI in travel: getting the user to complete the purchase. If it works, hotels will have to make sure their rates and availability are indexed on channels Alexa understands.
At HSMAI, the message was blunt: hospitality is already free and AI is watching everything. An attendee at HSMAI's Commercial Strategy Conference in San Antonio sums up the industry mood: guests spend more but are less loyal, and AI systems already monitor every interaction to predict buying behavior. Per eHotelier Insights, revenue managers are starting to use AI models that adjust prices based on the guest's real-time spending, not just historical occupancy.
Hotels and operations
The European Digital Identity Wallet (EUDI Wallet) arrives by late 2026 and will change check-in forever. Member states must make it available to citizens before the year ends. According to Hosteltur, hoteliers will verify guest identity with a QR code from their phone, with no passport photocopies or manual registration forms. The time saved at the front desk is huge, and integration with current PMS systems will be the next challenge.
Madrid and Barcelona cement their status as air hubs with +8% and +6% in seats respectively. OAG data for July 2026, compiled by Hosteltur, puts Barajas in sixth place (3.66 million seats) and El Prat in seventh (3.34 million). For city hotels in both destinations, that means more potential demand, but also more competition from new accommodations and added pressure on dynamic pricing.
What we are watching
- TheFork integration into Amex: how restaurant data will be matched with hotel stays and what happens to chain loyalty programs. Coverage continues at Skift.
- The Alexa+ test with Priceline: if it closes the sale inside the chat, Amazon could open its assistant to other OTAs and hotels in the coming months. The source is Skift.
- EUDI Wallet rollout: PMS vendors will need certification to read digital IDs. Those that skip it will lose front desk efficiency. Details at Hosteltur.
- Skift Global Forum 2026 (New York, September 22-24): under two months away, this is where the next moves in distribution and AI will surface. We will cover it live.
I will close with an opinion: the hotelier who is not looking at how to fold external spending data (restaurants, cars, digital identity) into their own stack is missing the boat. Amex knows it, Amazon knows it, and the EU knows it too. Technology is no longer a differentiator. It is the floor you walk on. And that floor is shifting toward real-time personalization. For those who can read it, interesting weeks lie ahead.
