Summary: Skift Research's Great Recalibration Index lands on a hard truth for hotels: in an AI-mediated booking world, a generic brand simply does not get recommended.

## Article

Skift Research has published its **Great Recalibration Index**, and the line that should be printed and pinned above every hotel revenue manager's desk is blunt: **the brands that don't stand for something specific will disappear first from the AI-curated shortlist**. Not last. First. That's the finding from the [Skift Research report](https://skift.com/2026/09/25/skift-research-travels-great-recalibration-index/), and it rewrites a lot of the assumptions hoteliers have been carrying around about how demand will reach them in the next few years.

The logic is simple once you sit with it. When a traveller asks an assistant to book a design hotel in Lisbon for a long weekend, that assistant does not browse 400 properties. It assembles a short list from whatever signals it trusts: structured data, reviews, brand positioning, price consistency, availability. A hotel with a fuzzy identity reads as noise. A hotel with a sharp one reads as a candidate. It's the same filter a good travel agent applied 20 years ago, only now it runs in milliseconds and at infinite scale.

My reading: this is a distribution problem disguised as a branding problem. Hotels that have spent the last decade optimising for the OTA algorithm now have to optimise for a second filter that no one fully controls. The upside is that the fix is cheaper than a new PMS: define what you are, say it clearly, and make sure every channel echoes that. Independents with character are, weirdly, better positioned than mid-market chains with none.
