What does this mean in practice? If your PMS hides its API behind a sales call, an NDA and a six-week integration project, every tool you want to plug in, from a revenue manager to an upsell engine to a payments layer, becomes a negotiation instead of a weekend. Self-serve docs are the difference between a hotel running its own stack and a hotel waiting for a vendor ticket.

My read: the 7% figure is not a scandal, it is a map of where the value is moving. Vendors that open their APIs attract builders, and builders bring hotels the tools they actually ask for. If you are choosing a PMS this year, put API openness on the shortlist next to price and support. It will matter more than either one by 2027.
