The European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) is due to be live in the last quarter of the year, and it lands on top of a wider problem: visas and travel authorisations are going digital faster than the systems airlines use to check them. For the traveller, getting a QR code by email is easy. For the person at the check-in desk who has to decide whether that document is valid before letting someone board, it is a different story.

According to [Hosteltur](https://www.hosteltur.com/178714_el-reto-de-etias-y-los-visados-digitales-como-comprobaran-las-aerolineas-que-son-validos.html), that asymmetry is the real bottleneck. Airlines carry the legal duty to refuse boarding to anyone without a valid permit, but they have no shared standard to query the authorisation databases in real time.

My take: this is not a doom story, it is an opening. Whoever builds a clean verification layer that plugs into check-in, DCS or a hotel's pre-arrival flow, and does it before ETIAS goes live, gets a very sticky seat at the table. Airlines will not build it alone. Hotels and OTAs that already touch the guest before departure can sell that certainty as part of the booking.
